MBA/ PGDM jobs get you the best salary in general, across the globe. If you are preparing for MBA placements in marketing, you need to be a little better on the major parameters. According to recent placement reports from top B-schools, more than 30–40% of MBA graduates choose Marketing as their specialization. The sector offers strong career growth, attractive packages, and diverse roles in FMCG, digital media, and retail industries. However, to secure the right placement, you must prepare strategically throughout your MBA or PGDM.

Functional Skills connecting to the Company

Generally, PGDM placements happen during November and December. By the time students have completed one and a half years on the campus, they must have studied most of the marketing subjects and must be aware of most of the theories and concepts. Here is the time now to differentiate yourself from the crowd.

  • Do thorough research on the products of the company from the beginning, and try to find out how many products have been successful and why others have not seen the light of day. This is important to know about the new launches and to know their case study. This can be done by meeting some old dealers or C&F agents of the company.
  • Start revising concepts you have read in your books, like strategic marketing, Segmentation, Targeting, and Positioning (STP), 4 P’s (Product, Price, Place, Promotion) of Marketing, Marketing Communication, Consumer Behaviour, and Digital Marketing, and so on. This is very important to demonstrate the application and link these concepts with the company's products. Most marketing jobs start with sales. Be clear on sales and distribution concepts and their application.
  • Know the competition: This is important to know the competitor, their products, policies, price, etc. Read newspapers daily and remain updated on the industry.

This is the first skill to prepare for MBA/PGDM Placements in Marketing.

Soft Skills

This generally covers: well preparing your resume, grooming, and maintaining your conduct best during the placement days on campus.

  • Draft Your Resume Well – Generally, a CV in the hands of the recruiter has a shelf life of 6 seconds. You need to ensure that your CV stands out in a bunch of papers. Write short, to the point, and make important terms bold. Redraft your CV every time, according to the requirements of the profile for which you are applying for an interview. Your CV as a fresher should not be more than 2 pages.
  • Keep your LinkedIn profile updated with a professional photo, headline, and relevant keywords like “MBA Marketing,” “Brand Strategy,” and “Digital Marketing.”
  • Prepare General Questions – Normally, 99% of interviews start with “Tell me about yourself”. Trust me, this question decides your fate. The next important question may be “Why Marketing”, sometimes they may ask you to “Sell a pen to them”. Prepare all these questions well in advance.
  • Do more Group discussions on the burning topics. Keep a watch on the time you spend speaking.
  • Start uplifting yourself physically – Take a nice haircut, if needed, and go for a face massage a day before the interview. Your face should glow during the interview. Get new clothes to fit you correctly.
